Ball Fires Staffer for Plagiarizing: News Report
State Sen. Greg Ball has fired an employee who used bits and pieces of other people's writings—including a 17-year-old's opinion piece—without giving credit, reports the Albany Times Union. "The action comes a day after the Hudson Valley Republican's spokesman refused to comment for a Times Union story about a bill banning killer whales from New York aquariums and sea parks that used writing from a 17-year-old's Huffington Post opinion piece and a Los Angeles Times article on the documentary "Blackfish," Casey Seiler reported on timesunion.com. Ball is running an online petition to gather support for that legislation. There are no captive killer whales currently in New York State, the paper said. Ball is often vocal on animal cruelty issues. The Times Union also reported:
After Ball's office was asked about those bills on Thursday afternoon, the memos from both measures as well as the killer whale bill disappeared from the Senate website.
Ball himself spent the day on Twitter, where he joshed reporters over the matter and collected thanks from killer whale advocates who hope to see the measure passed. There are currently no captive killer whales in New York state.
Before his office was asked about the other questionable bills, Ball tweeted out a picture of him feeding his Labrador puppy a piece of paper.
"OMG I caught Tito destroying the evidence," he wrote.

The Village of Brewster (VOB) Film Festival has announced its locations for its 2014 F The Village of Brewster (VOB) Film Festival has announced its locations for its 2014 Festival on Labor Day Weekend. The event is being held over three days, August 29-31, and has attracted local films, as well as films from over a dozen countries. "The sheer number of films we have received has been terrific. We have close to 60 films submitted so far and we still have six weeks left for filmmakers to submit their work," says festival Chairman, Bob Dumont. "To accommodate the increased number of films we would like to show, and to make up for the loss of not showing on the lawn of the Walter Brewster House, we had to look outside the Village." This year's Festival will be held in four different locations with a possibility of others to be added. Friday night's 'Dinner and a Movie' premiere, which kicks off the event, will be held at Southeast Grill on Route 6 in Southeast. "We are excited about using that facility as it allows us to stay in one venue for the event." The movie is yet to be announced. The Festival will also be using Empire Cinemas in Southeast on Saturday morning, and the Studio Around the Corner in the Village of Brewster for its Sunday slate of movies. "We certainly wanted to keep the Festival in the Village and are happy to be partnering with the Studio again," Dumont continued. The Film Festival committee decided to move the Saturday Night Short Festival from the Walter Brewster House, which was its home for the past two years. "We do regret not being able to show our films at that really wonderful venue and want to thank Landmarks for their past involvement. We had some technical issues which did not allow us to continue," says co-chair, Stacy Dumont. The Saturday Night Short Festival was the entire original event back in 2012. It is being moved to SPACE on Ryder Farm, at 406 Starr Ridge Road in Brewster. "Once we saw the Farm and its facilities, we were really excited about moving it there," says Ms. Dumont. "The setting of the Farm and the ability to show the films on an open field will create a wonderful backdrop for the Festival." Ryder Farm has plenty of parking and is easily accessible for those that might have mobility issues. "We certainly wanted to keep it accessible to the public and Ryder Farm provides us with the type of venue that can help the Festival grow." Ryder Farm is easy to get to and is minutes off Exit 10 on I-684. "We hope to have a full day of activities at Ryder Farm," Bob continued. The Saturday night event will still be free for all to attend. The Film Festival organizers are hopeful that the event will entice film goers to enjoy area businesses. "We are also looking for local restaurants to partner with us and provide our attendees with the many great places to eat in Southeast. So far three restaurants have signed on to provide lunch or dinner packages for the Festival attendees," Bob continued. The Film Festival has also partnered with the Danbury Hilton Garden Inn and reserved a block of rooms for $99 per night for the weekend. estival on Labor Day |
