The first big race is the girls NE seeded race where NJ No. 1 Voorhees and Sarah Disanza of High Point, the M of C gils champs, all have a shot at winning. Disanza was second here last year and just ran 17:47, tied for No. 5 all-time at Holmdel, to win the M of C race this past Weds. Voorhees ran a Holmdel No. 2 all-time 19:01.6 avg. to win its 4th M of C title. The big question is how will Voorhees, Disanza and of the rest of the NJ runners react to having three hard races in 8 days. Tom O'Neill of Middletown North, the boys M of C winner, will have to deal with the 3 races and 8 days thing as well. He ran 15:31, tied for No. 10 all-time at Holmdel, to win the M of C race. One team that won't have to worry about fat igue is US No. 1 CBA, which held out its top 5 guys and still won the M of C title on Weds. with a bunch of backups in one of the most amazing performances in high school sports history. |
The start of the new year has brought about some changes in the town board with Supervisor Barbara Gutzler naming Councilman Vincent Bettina as her new deputy supervisor.
Bettina has represented Ward 2 in the Town of Wappinger for nine terms.
"I'm honored to be asked," Bettina said. "I stand behind Barbara Gutzler and the work she's done, and I look forward to continuing my work with her."
Gutzler is also proud of Bettina's work, she stated in a press release.
"His experience and knowledge of town issues and procedures is extremely valuable," Gutzler stated. "His assistance in producing the (2013) budget was one of the reasons for the town’s compliance with the (2 percent) tax cap."
The lifelong Town of Wappinger resident has served as president of the Beacon City School District's Board of Education and said that a focus this year will be finding ways to save money in order "to stay on track for the next budget."
"I'm a big believer in less government and sharing services with other towns," Bettina said. "We always have to look ahead to see how we can do better."

Police probe fatal accident
Town of Poughkeepsie police are reviewing the evidence in a head-on collision, which killed a 29-year-old Wappingers Falls woman and sent two others to the hospital, Sgt. Todd Jicha said.
Jicha said police were waiting on the inspections of the two vehicles involved in the Saturday night crash.
Stephanie Brennan died of “blunt trauma,” Dutchess County Medical Examiner Dr. Kari Reiber said.
She was killed when she drove her car across a double-yellow line to pass another vehicle and crashed into a Jeep Liberty on Vassar Road near Silver Lane, police said Monday in a written statement.
A 22-year-old Wappingers Falls man, the driver of the Jeep, along with his 23-year-old female passenger, were taken to Saint Francis Hospital with “survivable injuries,” police said. Jicha declined to give out more information about the victims.
Brennan was driving a 2001 Nissan Sentra northbound when she entered the southbound lane.
The crash occurred shortly after 8 p.m.
All three people involved were wearing seatbelts, according to police.
Reiber pronounced Brennan dead at the scene and performed an autopsy Monday.
According to Brennan’s Facebook page, she worked at Harbor Freight Tools and had attended Arlington High School. She liked a wide variety of musical artists, including The Beatles, Johnny Cash and Lil Wayne, and her favorite activities were shopping and reading.
The traffic enforcement unit is continuing the investigation and is asking anyone who witnessed the accident to call them at 845-485-3680.
